Saturday 16 May 2026 (09.00-16.00)

It’s not possible to enrol on this course part-way through. You’ll need to attend from the start date in January.

You’ll be expected to complete projects, exercises, and research outside of your sessions at AUB. You’ll be provided with more details about timelines and project submission deadlines at the start of the course.

Suitable for adults aged 18+.

Level

Beginners or anyone with some experience who want to refresh or develop their skills further.

Experience or qualifications required

None – this is an introductory course. We have no formal academic entry requirements for our short courses. However, it will be beneficial if you’ve already completed one of our short courses or possess some art experience.

Deposit

You can choose to secure your place with a deposit of £400 and pay the remainder of your fees in one further instalment of £459. Simply, choose this option when booking your place online. The total balance of your course fee is payable by 1 December 2025. See our T&Cs (below) for further details.

Any additional costs

You'll need to provide basic study materials for this course. This'll incur an additional cost if you need to purchase it for the course. See the 'What to bring to class' section below for full details.

Additional materials and resources will be provided by AUB and is included in your course fee. Your SEG registration fee is also covered by your fee.

  • Notebook and pens/pencils

As part of your studies you may be using licensed software, such as Desktop Publisher, during classroom sessions. Please be aware that access to this software is only available whilst on campus in sessions or in the AUB Library. To benefit most from your course, we advise you to arrange private access to software; however, AUB is unable to provide software for personal use.

About this course

This part-time 20-week Skills Education Group (SEG) Award – Level 1 accredited course is specifically designed to provide you with an introduction to, and hands-on approach to developing knowledge of desktop publishing and to realise artistic design potential and talent.

This fully immersive, and highly practical course will encourage you to explore and develop your design skills and impactful visual creativity that could open doors to further study progression. Taught by expert tutor, Eleni Dimitriou, you will investigate, explore, and delve into the world of desktop publishing, and be introduced to developing core design skills working across a series of exciting projects. As you progress in your artistic and design abilities, specialist techniques, and creative flair, you'll build a personal portfolio to showcase your acquired technical skills that reflect and demonstrate your creative potential.

During this two-term course, you'll conduct a number of immersive and focused project assignments using a range of different resources and computer applications, primarily Adobe InDesign CC, and have numerous opportunities to experiment with a range of different creative styles and techniques, which will include, design, identity, digital and print media, for advertising, commercial and branding productions. 

Suitable for beginners and transitional creatives, this course is perfectly suited to students who are looking to take their first steps into accredited studies with Arts University Bournemouth (AUB), and having a Level 1 qualification gives you the opportunity to prepare for progression into further learning.

Ideally, you'll have previously completed a related short course at AUB and wish to build on your skills or have some existing knowledge to start your studies.

At the end of the course you'll:

  • Have a sound understanding of the importance of appropriate planning and preparation, including research methods.
  • Be able to work to a set brief and develop suitable ideas and bodies of work in response within desktop publishing.
  • Possess an enhanced ability to visually communicate your ideas and develop your visual voice.
  • Have increased confidence in your own skills and feel inspired.
  • Have boosted creativity and imagination.
  • Possess the foundations to continue creating beyond this course.
  • In each of the two termly Saturday sessions, you will receive a personal formative performance review by your tutor.
  • Possess improved artistic skills, including both essential and progressive techniques.
  • Have a sound understanding of the importance of appropriate planning and preparation, including research methods.
  • Be able to work to a set brief and develop suitable ideas and bodies of work in response within desktop publishing.
  • Possess an enhanced ability to visually communicate your ideas and develop your visual voice.
  • Have increased confidence in your own skills and feel inspired.
  • Have boosted creativity and imagination.
  • Possess the foundations to continue creating beyond this course.

Will I be assessed?

Yes, if you complete this 20-week programme and meet the necessary ongoing assessment criteria set by Skills Education Group (SEG) you’ll be awarded an accredited Level 1 Skills Education Group certificate.

Skills Education Group will conduct final assessment of work submitted for Level 1 Moderation; graded either Pass/Fail.

Eleni Dimitriou is a Graphic Designer based in Bournemouth. She has studied Graphic Arts at UWCN and she has a MA in Interactive Media.
