Thursday 15 January – 19 March 2026 (10 Thursday evenings, 18.00-21.00)

Saturday 14 March 2026 (09.00-16.00)

Continuation in Summer term 2026

Thursday 9 April – 11 June 2026 (10 Thursday evenings, 18.00-21.00)

Saturday 16 May 2026 (09.00-16.00)

It’s not possible to enrol on this course part-way through. You’ll need to attend from the start date in January.

You’ll be expected to complete projects, exercises, and research outside of your sessions at AUB. You’ll be provided with more details about timelines and project submission deadlines at the start of the course.

Suitable for adults aged 18+.

Level

Beginners or anyone with some experience who wants to refresh or develop their skills further.

Experience or qualifications required

None – this is an introductory course. We have no formal academic entry requirements for our short courses. However, it will be beneficial if you’ve already completed one of our short courses or possess some art experience.

Deposit

You can choose to secure your place with a deposit of £400 and pay the remainder of your fees in one further instalment of £459. Simply, choose this option when booking your place online. The total balance of your course fee is payable by 1 December 2025. See our T&Cs (below) for further details.

Any additional costs

You'll need to provide basic study materials for this course. This'll incur an additional cost if you need to purchase it for the course. See the 'What to bring to class' section below for full details.

Additional materials and resources will be provided by AUB and is included in your course fee. Your SEG registration fee is also covered by your fee.

  • Your own set of professional make-up brushes (at least 10-12) and brush cleanser.
  • Skincare: make-up remover/wipes, cleanser, toner and moisturiser.
  • Hygiene: Tissues, cotton wool/buds, disposable mascara wands and lip applicators.
  • Make-up: Primer, foundation, concealer, powder, blusher a wide range of eyeshadow colours, eye and lip pencils, mascara, lipsticks and glosses, brow products and strip and individual lashes.
  • A camera or mobile phone to record your personal work.

About this course

Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) is thrilled to present a new 20-week Skills Education Group (SEG) Award – Level 1 accredited course in Make-Up for Media. This course is ideal for complete beginners or those with some experience looking to launch a career in professional make-up artistry or further study skills in higher education.

Delivered over two terms, you will gain essential skills and techniques in our award-winning ‘BA (Hons) Make-Up for Media and Performance’ studios. Our hands-on curriculum ensures you receive practical training while exploring the dynamic world of make-up artistry. You will learn fundamental make-up processes, application techniques, and styles using various mediums, enabling you to create stunning looks with confidence. Engage in exciting project assignments designed to refine your abilities and expand your portfolio.

As you practice, you’ll gain experience by applying make-up on each other, fostering an understanding of client experiences across diverse face shapes and skin complexions.

By the end of the course, you will possess the knowledge and creative skills necessary to confidently step into the professional arena, ready to pursue opportunities in weddings, photo shoots, theatre productions, and beyond!

You will be introduced to the fundamental make-up processes, approaches, and essential skills to advance your knowledge quickly and confidently to create make-up looks and styles in a systematic fashion, where you will be provided a series of exciting project assignments to conduct throughout the course to advance and evidence your learning and gain experience working to a brief.

  • An introduction to the world of the professional make-up artist, including historic references, current practices, and how make-up impacts and connects to the creative arts.
  • Health and safety considerations, patch-testing, hygiene, and best working practices.
  • Basic media and materials handling practice
  • How make-up can be used in various art forms, looks, and styles.
  • Facial shapes, bone structure and skin types.
  • Mediums, methods, and specialist application techniques.
  • Alternative processes and special effects make-up applications.
  • Client consultation techniques and costing services as a make-up artist.
  • Portfolio development

At the end of the course you'll:

  • Have gained valuable insight into the world of professional make-up artistry.
  • Have experience using different make-up mediums, application methods and techniques.
  • Have developed practical techniques for integrating special effects in your final looks.
  • Possess fundamental knowledge and essential creative skills to develop as a make-up artist and confidently apply your practice in the real world.

  • Possess the foundations to continue creating beyond this course.

Will I be assessed?

You'll be continually assessed throughout the course in a variety of ways including practical tasks, observations, assignments, presentations, and portfolio reviews. In each of the two termly Saturday sessions, you'll receive a personal formative performance review by your tutor.

Skills Education Group will conduct final assessment of work submitted for Level 1 Moderation; graded either Pass/Fail.
